Puerto Rico Trained / Licensed Physicians

***All rules are subject to change from month to month. You will need to contact the Medical Board in question before applying to insure that their rules are

As of December 2008 there are a couple of State Medical Boards  which will accept applications from Physicians who are licensed in Puerto Rico and have taken the Puerto Rico State License Examination.

Washington Medical Board (State):

If you took the Puerto Rico Medical Examination before 10/1993 then Washington will accept the examination. If you took it after 10/1993 then the examination will not be accepted.  This rule is subject to change. We encourage you to call the Board before applying to insure that you are in compliance with their rules.

The Board's direct phone number is (360) 236-4788

Missouri Medical Board:

We were told verbally  by the Board that they accept the Puerto Rico Medical Board Examination. Currently we have a number of physicians who are in process with Missouri who have only taken the PR Medical Exam. Once the first license is issued we will post confirmation of this at this location.    03/17/2010.

The Board's direct phone number is  (573) 751-0098

MedLicense.com has successfully licensed 4 physicians in Missouri in 2010 who took the Puerto Rico State Medical Examination.

***To qualify for this license you have to have attended a Medical School in Puerto Rico or the States. International Graduates are required to have a valid ECFMG Certificate or Fifth Pathway Certificate.

MedLicense.com is the only Physician Licensing Company in the USA to provide licensure services for the State of Puerto Rico. As you have probably already discovered, the Puerto Rico Medical Board does not have a website. Nor do they answer their phones. Email is not an option with the Puerto Rico Medical Board. Simply obtaining the application can be an insurmountable tasks in order that a physician might apply. As such, in order to meet the needs of our clients, MedLicense.com has representatives in Puerto Rico who are able to meet with the Puerto Rico Board on a regular basis. This is a necessary requirement to successfully see the Puerto Rico Medical License process through.

Our licensure time frame for Puerto Rico typically averages 3 to 5 months. This brings Puerto Rico into line with the majority of the other more difficult State Medical Boards. What should you know before proceeding to apply to Puerto Rico?

The fee paid to Puerto Rico is $1250.00
You will need two licensed Puerto Rico Physicians to complete the Puerto Rico Medical Board Reference Form. The best source for this requirement typically can be found in the facility/employer in Puerto Rico which is requesting that you apply for a license with the Puerto Rico Medical Board
The process with the Puerto Rico Medical Board typically cycles on a bi-weekly basis. As such updates are going to have an accuracy of 14 days give or take. Updates can only be obtained when we send our staff member to the Board to meet with the Board.
The Puerto Rico Medical Board is very inefficient. As such they lose 20-25% of the mail sent to them. This causes delays. The process grinds slowly with this medical board and as such has to be built into the expected time frame for issuance of the Medical License
The Fee which MedLicense.com charges for Puerto Rico is $1098.00. This is double the fee for the Licensure process for any other Medical Board in the USA. The reason for this is that  we have a much higher base line cost to handle the process for Puerto Rico due to the unique requirements of the Puerto Rico Medical Board process.
